International Travel Health Insurance |
|
T he first thing you should do when you are planning an overseas trip is to check with your health insurer. They may offer coverage for travel to certain countries or for certain periods of time. Get a list from the insurer of the countries/facilities that they cover, and any limits in coverage, such as total amount or amount per type of service. Here are some questions to ask:
- Do they offer international coverage?
- Are there any limits to the coverage?
- Are you covered for medical expenses that may be required after your trip, for a medical event that occurred overseas?
- Do you have any coverage to get you back home if you require an air ambulance?
Not everyone is going to need to buy additional coverage when travelling internationally. For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield insurers typically have an international component to their plans. You should understand your coverage before you buy any more.
Make sure that you don't get ripped-off. By from an insurer licensed in your state - that way you'll have the department of insurance to help you should any problems arise, such as denial of claims. You will also be protected by regulations that ensure that your claims will be paid if the insurer goes out of business.
You should contact your state department of insurance to find licensed insurers in your state offering the type of coverage you desire (international travel health insurance). Find out the costs of short term international travel health insurance and other health insurance choices.
